Empower someone
I recently heard Joan Chittister, the nun and author, talk about power in a video presentation. She talked about exploitative power, competitive power and manipulative power. But, she urged her audience to use their power to empower other people. Empowering other people, she stressed, is the best use of power. –Joy

An empty woman
The Week magazine is celebrating 20 years of publishing with “a sampling of timeless observations” from its Wit & Wisdom column—and the quotes are marvelous. An empty woman is full of herself. Or, as author Edward Abbey once said, “An empty man is full of himself”—as was first quoted by the Chicago Tribune.

Talk to your enemies
The Week magazine is celebrating 20 years of publishing with “a sampling of timeless observations” from its Wit & Wisdom column—and the quotes are marvelous. Here’s one. “If you want peace, don’t talk to your friends. Talk to your enemies,” Desmon Tutu once said—and was quoted first by the HuffingtonPost.com.

Simple or complex?
The Week magazine is celebrating 20 years of publishing with “a sampling of timeless observations” from its Wit & Wisdom column—and the quotes are marvelous. Here’s one. “If things were simple, word would have gotten around.” Those words came from philosopher Jacques Derrida—and originally appeared in TheBrowser.com.

Blessed are you
My friend Kerry Smith, a Methodist minister, shared this blessing in her church newsletter. Kerry found it on Kate Bowler’s podcast. This year, we have had two doses of vaccine, and we spent Easter with our daughter Mary Elizabeth and her husband Jesús. It was a splendid day. Mary…

Music is the sound of heaven
“The truth is that music is not a melody; it is a place in time,” says Joan Chittister, a Roman Catholic nun and author. “It is somewhere to go where no one else, no noise, no interruptions can intrude….It takes our noisy, crowded lives and quiets us in the orbit of the sublime. Music is the…

A little TV in your head
I remember when my daughter Mary Elizabeth read lots of Beverly Cleary books. I was sad when I heard that Cleary died recently, but I smiled when I read an obituary that mentioned a letter one girl wrote to the author. Reading, the girl wrote, is “like having a little television set in your head.”…

Wonderful, not perfect
I went to the arboretum for lunch. The park was a bit crowded. We had to wait in line to order our food. It took us a few minutes to find a quiet, isolated place to eat. However, the blooming flowers and cherry trees were beautiful. It was a sunny day. And, it was marvelous…

Fire for the mind
I miss Ruth Bader Ginsberg, but her wisdom continues to inspire me. (And, my friend Susie recently gave me an RBG mask. It has a lace “collar” across the top!) Here’s another RBG quote I found recently. “A house is no home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as for…
