What’s your emotional gap?

I don’t remember exactly when or what program I was listening to, but I heard a most interesting discussion on National Public Radio during the holidays about “emotional gaps.”

What are you shopping for when you buy presents, especially expensive presents, for family and friends? If there’s a gap between who you are and who you want to be—an emotional gap, you may be shopping for self-esteem or status or love.

I have been thinking about emotional gaps. I don’t think I try to fill my emotional gap by shopping. Instead, when I feel needy, I try to fill my emotional gap with food.
