It was Dolly Madison, whose husband was president from 1809-1817, who hurriedly left the White House when British soldiers marched into Washington during the War of 1812. However, even though she knew that she had to go quickly, she took the time to pack important government documents and the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington and take them with her.
