I wish I could lose five pounds. I wish my closet was clean. I wish I had more willpower.

“Modern life is a wonderful thing, rife with freedom and opportunity, but it comes with the problem of self-control,” says Daniel Akst, the author of We Have Met the Enemy: Self-control in an Age of Excess. “That’s a nice problem, since I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to be in charge.”

I found that quote in an article in the February 13, 2011, issue of The Dallas Morning News, and I just found the article in that old stack of papers in the back of my closet. I am happy that I found it, and I am happy that my closet is a little cleaner than it used to be.
