Take a walk

For me, the best way to take a break is to take a walk. When I’m tired, a walk makes me feel refreshed. When I’m too busy and feeling overwhelmed, a walk makes me feel calmer. When I’m stressed, a walk helps me relax.

I recently found this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson on the wall at a Dallas elementary school.

“Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.”

I like Emerson’s references to “good speech” and “good silence.” Often the best walk is a quiet walk by yourself, but sometimes a walk and a talk with a friend is even better.

I found the quote about walking online and a couple of other Emerson quotes worth repeating, too.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

“Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
