To be a leader, you first have to lead yourself.
That was the interesting conclusion from a leadership workshop that I attended at the National Girl Scout convention last month.
The workshop leaders talked about your “inside” self and your “outside” self—and also your social self and your essential/authentic self. You can be a powerful leader, they said, when your social self and your essential/authentic self are the same.
On a worksheet, the workshop leaders quoted Peter Block from his book The Answer to How? Is Yes: “The antidote for our daily exhaustion may not be rest, but wholeheartedness. We burn out not by giving away too much, as most of us think, but in trying to give what we don’t possess.”

One response to “Lead yourself”
I like the Peter Block quote!
Also, I really like the idea that “To be a leader, you first have to lead yourself.”
