Uppity-er and uppity-er

During this election year, I’ve been thinking back to 1972 when I campaigned for Shirley Chisholm and attended the Democratic convention in Miami.

At the convention, I shook hands with Gloria Steinem and attended meetings of the National Women’s Political Caucus. One of the speakers was Liz Carpenter.

“Women,” Liz Carpenter told us, “are getting uppity—and we’re just going to keep getting uppity-er and uppity-er.”
