The number of women leaders

The numbers tell the story of how far we have come and how far we still have to go.

Women now hold top leadership positions—president, prime minister or its equivalent—in more than 70 countries in Europe, Latin America and the Asia Pacific. In fact, women lead two of Europe’s most powerful nations—Germany and Great Britain.

But, of course, a woman has never been president or vice president of the United States.

The United States ranks 97th among 193 nations worldwide in the percentage of women in the lower house of Congress, according to information from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Six of the 50 state governors are women, and 20 of the 100 United States senators are women.

We found these numbers in the November 11, 2016, issue of The Dallas Morning News.
