As soon as I made my list of things-to-do when I need a boost, I decided that I needed to make another list of things-not-to-do when I need a boost.
As I explained in my last blog post, when I’m feeling a little low, a good book or a walk with my dog can make me feel better.
However, when I’m feeling in a funk, my first impulse is to self-medicate with food. Chocolate, of course. Or, ice cream. Or, cashews or potato chips.
Chocolate can make me feel much better—but only for a very short time. Then, soon, I feel full—and fat, lethargic and overall much worse than I did before I started overeating.
I’m putting my list of things-not-to-do in my notebook next to my things-to-do. Next time I’m feeling a little low, I hope that this list will remind me NOT to:
- Eat chocolate.
- Hibernate and avoid people.
- Say something cranky to my husband.
- Do nothing.
