Why do we keep running?

Claudia, Faith’s daughter in the book Faith Bass Darling’s Last Garage Sale by Ann Rutledge, has been running for years from her parents, from her parents’ 19th-century mansion, from her past.

Claudia “had begun to fail at everything—being tough, being buff, being young, even being a Buddhist, a practically impossible thing to do….You can only run so many marathons, teach so many aerobics classes, quote so many sayings of Buddha, marry so many losers and talk so much about your warped, angry inner child to people with degrees before you have to stop,” explains Ann Rutledge.

I smiled when I read about Claudia’s marathons and aerobics classes and marriages, but I also stopped reading for a few minutes and thought about some of the things I keep running away from.
