A hummingbird moth?

My daughter, Mary Elizabeth, thought she saw a tiny hummingbird feeding on purple flowers. She followed it as it fluttered around Blue Spring near Eureka Springs, where we were vacationing recently, trying to take a photograph.

She walked slowly and quietly as she pursued the tiny creature—until she saw a dark snake suddenly slide across the sidewalk in front of her.

Mary Elizabeth, who never gets flustered by bugs or frogs, grabbed my arm and jumped back.

The snake was only one of the amazing creatures we saw that day. The woman in the gift shop told us that the tiny bird-like creature was a hummingbird moth. We also saw a black lizard with white stripes, a rabbit and half a dozen graceful deer.

As writer Cheryl Strayed says, there are so many “amazing things in this world.”
