How about a disconnected vacation?

It required all of the logistical skills of a very determined mother to find a week this summer when my husband and two college-student children were available for a family vacation.

“Why don’t we try a disconnected vacation?” I suggested before we left home.

Everyone laughed.

The four of us arrived at the beach with three Smart phones, one Blackberry, one iPad and two laptops. We used our electronic devices to check e-mail messages, navigate to restaurants and read books online. We also read the old-fashioned kind of books, took walks on the beach and competed in some lively card games.

Most important, we spent 10 days together. It was a wonderful vacation.
