Hope and joy

Bill Holston says that he is hopeful.

Holston is hopeful in the same sense as Vaclav Havel, he wrote in the December 4, 2019, issue of the Dallas Morning News.

“Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously headed for early success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it stands a chance to succeed,” Havel once said. “Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism.”

Holston, the executive director of the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, has provided free legal services to asylum-seekers for more than 25 years.
