Do you need to repack your bags?

While I was in New Mexico recently visiting my brother, I read an article in the Albuquerque Journal about a lecture by Richard Leider, author of Repacking Your Bags: Lighten Your Load for the Rest of Your Life.

I like Leider’s metaphor, which originated when he was on a walking safari and a tribal elder, carrying only a walking stick, asked him what he was carrying in his heavy bag. After Leider had spent 15 minutes pulling items out of his backpack, the elder asked, “Does all this make you happy?”

Sometimes, Leider suggests, you need to take a break, figure out where your journey is taking you and what the essentials are that you need to take with you.

Because I like the metaphor, I found the book on Amazon. I also found a customer review. “Another cutesy, light-weight, pop-psychology, feel good book,” the reviewer commented. “I put this book on the top of my list of books that needn’t be read.”

I still like the metaphor.
