Tell a girl that she is smart

Researchers at New York University asked boys and girls to identify a person who is really, really smart.

At age five, children associated being smart with their own gender. But, by six or seven, girls were “significantly less likely” to pick women as being really, really smart.

The study suggests that girls often believe that men are inherently smarter and more talented than women, making girls less motivated to pursue novel activities or ambitious careers, reported the journal Science. We read about the study in the January 27, 2017, issue of The Dallas Morning News.

How sad! I am getting up on my soap box—again. This week, I am going to tell every young girl I meet how smart she is.
