Is your home pretty neat or org porn?

It’s almost time for spring cleaning. And, this year, Oprah has made it trendy. The biggest headline on cover of the March 2011 issue of The Oprah Magazine  is displayed in a bright yellow box and announces: “De-Clutter Your Life! Say Good-bye to the Stuff that’s Weighing You Down.”

Inside the magazine, in a one-page column titled “What I Know for Sure,” Oprah explains that her life is “filled with so much clutter. So as I count down to the end of the show and move on to my next chapter, at OWN, I’m not just cleaning my closet. I’m cleaning out my life. And I’m keeping only that which delights me or enhances my well-being….I want to be lean and clean for the future.”

“That’s great,” Fayteen announces. And Joy quickly agrees. We both have issues with clutter.

Why then does Joy feel puzzled—and maybe even a little anxious—when she sees photos in the magazine of “the gorgeously organized, perfectly systemized, outrageously tidy home of a Manhattan design guru”?

She finds the answer a couple of days later in Chinaberry,  a catalog that arrives in the morning mail. Inside is a review of a book called Pretty Neat—The Buttoned-Up Way to Get Organized and Let Go of Perfection by Alicia Rockmore and Sarah Welch. The reviewer comments:

“There’s a name for this glossy, airbrushed, fantasy world of color-coordinated closets, pristine kitchens and picture-perfect work spaces: org porn.”

Not a single magazine editor has ever asked to publish photos of Fayteen or Joy’s closets or garages. We have issues, but org porn is not one of them.

Where do you fit on the continuum from hoarder to pretty neat to org porn?

During the next few months, we plan to publish a series of periodic blog posts about clutter—the clutter in our homes, the clutter of too many items on our to-do lists, the clutter of noise in our lives, the clutter of bad habits and bad thoughts in our heads, the clutter of too many activities and too many people who fill up our time, but don’t enrich our lives.

And, in between publishing blog posts, we may even clean out some closets.
