A lesson relearned—Be kind

When I volunteered one night recently with children with special needs, I was pleased to see that one preschooler with autism was talking more.

As I watched him, I saw that, like any small child, he wasn’t always on his best behavior. He sometimes acted out, shoving or hitting his older sister.

However, I was very pleased and I smiled when his sister reacted calmly every time he misbehaved. “What’s the verse?” she would ask.

And, this preschooler, who was almost nonverbal the last time I saw him, would respond immediately: “Be kind one ‘nother. Ephesians 4:32.”

Next time I need to be reminded to be kind, I’m going to tell myself, “What’s the verse?”
