A second chance

Today we’re living long lives—long enough to give most of us a second chance, explained Anna Quindlen, author of Still Life with Bread Crumbs, during a recent visit to Dallas.

In her new book, Quindlen gives Rebecca, the main character, a second chance at success in her career and in love.

As the book jacket explains, Rebecca’s career is “descendent, her bank balance shaky, and she has fled the city for the middle of nowhere.”

“People froze you in place, Rebecca sometimes thought, trudging through the woods,” Quindlen writes. “More often, you froze yourself, often into a person in whom you truly had no interest. So you had a choice: You could continue a masquerade or you could give up on it….It was hard to know how to do that.”

It wasn’t easy, but Rebecca figured out a way to unfreeze herself. She discovered her second chance.
