Another year, another birthday

My birthday is approaching.

“I can’t believe I’m this old,” I told my husband the other day.

However, every time I start to feel a bit depressed about the inevitable, I remember my wise friend Jane, who was my roommate the summer I worked in Boston.

It seems amusing now, but back then I was concerned about turning 21. When I expressed my concern that I was going to be 21 and I still hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with my life, Jane comforted me.

“Be patient,” she said. “There are a lot of people—even old people—who haven’t figured everything out.

“So far,” she added, “I’ve found that every year I learn something and every year life gets better.”

Someday, I’m sure, I’ll be turning 85 and I’ll look back and think how silly I was in 2012 when I worried about getting older.

  1. That’s a good quote from your friend.

Also, aunt Ola would tell you that you are still very young!
